History of Alder Manor

Alder Manor is the home of Tara Circle. This  palatial 1912 mansion with majestic rooms, a separate chapel and beautiful gardens reminds one of a great Irish house, a magnificent setting for a community, regional and international cultural center.

Alder was the inspiration of William Boyce Thompson  (1869-1930) who rose from obscurity in Alder Gulch, Montana to become the "Copper Magnate."  He was one of the wealthiest men in America at the turn of the century. The  Manor was the fulfillment of his dream.

For many years Alder Manor served as the proud main house of Elizabeth Seton College. Now after years of disuse Tara will restore it to its former beauty as a National Historic Landmark. It will become a center for exciting events including Celtic holidays, concerts, lectures, classes, seminars and workshops and a host of activities celebrating the unique cultural wealth of the Irish Diaspora all over the world.

Many artifacts at Alder, such as this lamp and Tiffany style window have been stolen during recent years. Tara Circle will work with help from its supporters to replace these items and restore the building to its former glory.

Alder Manor, valuable asset to film crews during 2001.
